Fort Hays State University’s cross country program is one of the most storied programs in the state of Kansas. Lead by head coach Jason McCullough, the cross country team won its first MIAA conference title in 2012.
Justin Montney is a redshirt freshman from Topeka, Kan. As I started the interview I wanted to get a little bit of a background on why he chose to be a cross country runner. His motivation to exercise and run came from his fight with childhood obesity.
Justin made the varsity team this year, training year round, running anywhere from 35 to 60 miles a week. The training facilities in and around Hays are often thought to be some of the best in the state. Justin and the rest of the FHSU Cross Country team will be participating in the NCAA Central Regional in Joplin, MO on Saturday, November 14.
