TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but could not hold off an offensive flurry by Northeastern State down the stretch in a 2-1 loss on the road. NSU outshot FHSU 25-5 in the match and found the net twice in the final 21 minutes of the match to snap FHSU’s three-match win streak.
The Tigers (6-5 overall, 3-2 MIAA) played to a scoreless tie by halftime, but Gabrielle Makatura put the Tigers in position for a win with a goal just 22 seconds into the second half. However, Northeastern State’s relentless second half offensive pressure was too much for the Tigers to hold off. NSU took 17 shots in the second half.
FHSU goalkeeper Kristen Thompson had a tremendous individual effort, saving 12 shots, but NSU (9-2 overall, 4-1 MIAA) put balls past her in the 70th and 83rd minutes of the game. Julia Mathis provided the equalizer and Kelsey McIntyre had the game winner.
The Tigers did not have a player take more than one shot in the match, spreading the team’s five shots among five players. Thompson moved to 5-4 overall with the loss. NSU keeper Jordan Woodruff moved to 9-2 overall on the year, recording two saves.
The Tigers head to Edmond, Okla., for a Sunday match with Central Oklahoma at 12 pm.
