The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team has a busy weekend with a road match and a home match. FHSU takes on Newman University Friday (Sept. 25) and Texas A&M-International Sunday (Sept. 27). The Tigers are 5-1 overall, coming off an electrifying win in the final seconds of double overtime against West Texas A&M on Tuesday (Sept. 22).
The Tigers offense has been firing on all cylinders this year, averaging 2.67 goals per game. The majority of those goals are from Mauricio Castorino and Maurizio Costa with five each on the year. Anthony Hernandez has added three himself after registering the third hat-trick in FHSU history earlier this year in a 4-0 win against Lubbock Christian.
Goalkeeper Michael Yantz has done a solid job in between the pipes. He has played every minute of every game for the Tigers, while recording two shutouts.
Newman enters Friday at 2-3-1. The Jets are .500 (1-1) at home this season and are coming off a loss to No. 5 ranked Midwestern State. The Jets make the most of their opportunities with a .521 shots on goal percentage, which could pose a challenge for Yantz and the Tiger defense.
The Tigers are back home Sunday to take on Texas A&M-International at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Dustdevils, currently sporting a record of 1-4, have a match Friday (Sept 25) against Oklahoma Christian before heading to Hays. Ryan Hodgson leads the Dustdevils with two goals on the year.
