HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State used all but 11 seconds of a match to find its first goal of the season, but it was a big one in a thrilling 1-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday (Sept. 4). Jordan Hester found the net at 89:49 to give the Tigers a win in their season opener.
The wind played a huge factor in the match. With a strong south wind, FHSU battled against elements in the first half, but benefited in the second. FHSU was outshot 6-1 by SMSU in the first half, but turned the tables in the second with the wind for a 12-1 advantage. The 12th shot of the second half proved to be the winner as Cassi Moosburger found Jordan Hester about 20 yards out. Hester beat a defender and netted the ball in the bottom right corner with 11 seconds remaining.
The women’s team looks to build off the momentum from the win when they take on Minot State on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 11:00 am in Hays, Kan.
