In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Camille Caron-Bedard and Jessica Johnson lost 8-3 to Lisa Pleskan and Carissa Villaflor. At No. 2, Brittney Ricci and Katie Hipp lost 8-4 to Kate Bugayenko and Hillary Hicks. At No. 3, Michelle Miller and Reinette Strydom lost 8-5 to Ariana Raga and Courtney Dold.
In singles play, Newman took all matches in straight sets. Caron-Bedard lost at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, to Bugayenko. Pleskan defeated Ricci at No. 2 by a score of 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3, Miller fell 6-1, 6-3 to Dold. At No. 4, Hicks defeated Strydom 6-4, 6-3. Raga defeated Johnson at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1, and Villaflor defeated Raven Dick at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
Fort Hays State had three seniors play their final matches on Saturday, which included Caron-Bedard, Ricci, and Miller. Caron-Bedard and Ricci were each four-year players in the program, while Miller played her final two years at FHSU after transferring from Barton Community College. Caron-Bedard finished with 68 career wins (31 singles, 37 doubles), Ricci finished with 90 career wins (44 singles, 46 doubles), and Miller finished with 25 career wins (13 singles, 12 doubles).
Ricci finished third on the all-time NCAA combined wins list at FHSU, just six shy of the record 96 held by Kris Marten. Her 44 singles wins are also third on the career list. Caron-Bedard’s 68 wins finished seventh on the all-time NCAA combined wins list. She finished ninth on the all-time singles wins list.
