Tigers get a walk-off win in run-rule fashion; top Bethany 16-6

Fort Hays State baseball picked up its fifth win in the last six games with a 16-6 run-rule win over Bethany College on Wednesday in Hays at Larks Park. The Tigers used back-to-back home runs in the seventh from Kevin Czarnecki and Cooper Langley to end the game in run-rule fashion.
Bethany (18-19) took an early 3-0 lead in the first, but FHSU pushed across two in the first and three in the second to take a 5-3 lead. FHSU never trailed again, moving to 11-22 overall on the season.

Langley triggered the scoring for FHSU in the first with a two-RBI double. Caleb Cherryholmes drove home two in the second with a single and Austin Unrein followed with an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

FHSU exploded for six runs in the fourth, building its lead to 11-3. Unrein started the scoring with a RBI double, followed by a RBI triple by Czarnecki. Nick Hammeke drove home two with a single, then Jake Lanferman drove home one with a single and Connor Ross drew a bases-loaded walk.

Bethany cut the lead down to five with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but FHSU ended the game in the seventh with five runs before Bethany recorded an out. Unrein added his third RBI of the game with a single, then Czarnecki hit a three-run homer to push his RBI total to four on the day. Langley ended the game with a solo homer to produce his third RBI of the game as well.

Brad Spires picked up the win for FHSU in his start, going 5.0 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two. Kyle Vogt allowed two runs in his inning of work, but neither were earned. Ty Thomas also surrendered an unearned run in an inning of work.

JC Bird took the loss for Bethany. He pitched 2.0 innings in his start, allowing five runs. Ryley Ross allowed six in 1.1 innings of work. Christiannel Cosme did not allow any runs in his 2.2 innings of relief, while Robert Johnson allowed five to the Tigers in the seventh without recording an out.

The Tigers return to conference action this weekend at Pittsburg State in a four-game series. The teams will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
