Tigers place fourth at Jimmy May-Hem Open

Taking a weekend break from dual competition, No. 15 Fort Hays State University sent eight wrestlers to Baldwin City, this Sunday to compete at the Jimmy May-Hem Open. Joey Dozier(149) and Justin Scott (285) each claimed individual titles, Skyler Hittle (197) finished runner-up and William Homalon (141) took third at the event.

Dozier went 4-0 on the day with three pins, including a win by fall in 3:35 over Victor Hughes (Bethany) in the championship. Prior to that, Dozier started the day with a bye and back-to-back pins over Isaiah Stedwell (Benedictine) in 4:26 and Christian Ascencio (Bethany) in 4:30 to reach the semifinals, where he was victorious, 14-2, over Dillon Scanlon.

At heavyweight, Scott went 4-0 as well, picking up two falls. After a bye, Scott stuck Mathew Holt (Bethany) in just 2:47 before knocking off Beau Bennett (Baker) by decision, 8-2, to advance to the semifinals. Once there, Scott put another 2:47 pin together over Fernando Herrera (Bacone) and followed it with a 6-2 championship decision against Central Missouri’s De’quence Goodman.

Hittle was 2-1 at 197 pounds, picking up falls over Tavon Alleyne (Bethany) and Henry Mederios (Bacone) to advance to the finals, where he dropped an 8-0 major decision to Kyler Atwood (Bethany).

Homalon was active throughout the tournament, scoring over 50 points with two falls on his way to a third-place finish. Homalon started the day with a tech fall (19-3) over Caleb Osborn (Truman State) and followed it with a fall in 4:52 over Drew Harbinson (Baker). After a narrow 16-14 loss in the semifinals, Homalon stuck Mario Corado in 1:33 to advance to the consolation finals. There, the freshman scored 21 points en route to a 21-14 decision over Kyle Wilson (Baker).

The Tigers return to dual competition this Wednesday against Adams State. Wrestling in Alamosa, Colo., is set for 6 p.m.
