Fort Hays State women’s basketball looks to run its win streak to three games on Tuesday when it travels to Wichita, Kan., to take on Newman University. Game time is set for 5:30 pm at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University. The Tigers take an overall record of 3-1 into the contest.
Fort Hays State holds a two-game win streak over Newman, defeating the Jets each of the last two years at home. This will be the first meeting in Wichita between FHSU and Newman in women’s basketball since 2010-11, when Newman won by a score of 66-52. That is the only win for Newman ever in the all-time series between the schools, where FHSU holds a 12-1 advantage. The Tigers defeated the Jets last year in Hays 114-86, a game that saw six Tigers reach double figures in scoring.
Kate Lehman earned MIAA Player of the Week honors for her efforts this past week in wins over McPherson College and Cameron University. In a 120-39 win over McPherson, she had 30 points and eight rebounds in just 17 minutes of action, then in a 93-52 win over Cameron, posted her first double-double of the season with 26 points, 14 rebounds, and eight blocked shots. Last year, she had a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds against Newman. For the season so far, Lehman is averaging 22.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
Also averaging double figures in scoring so far for FHSU are Jill Faxon (14.3) and Chelsea Mason (10.8).Beth Bohuslavsky leads the team in assists at 4.75 per game.
The Tigers averaged 106.5 points in their two wins at home this past week, winning by an average of 61 points in the two contests. FHSU shot 55.2 percent from the field in the two games and nearly a 50 percent clip from deep, going 17-of-35 beyond the 3-point line. Free-throw shooting was also good at 83.7 percent. FHSU looks to pick up its shooting rate away from the coliseum, as it shot just 35.6 percent from the field and 28.9 percent beyond the 3-point the opening weekend of the season in St. Paul, Minn.
