Eight Tigers finish in Top 6 at UNK Holiday Inn Open; Page wins 285 pound title

Fort Hays State Wrestling grabbed one individual championship, one runner-up spot and saw eight wrestlers finish in the Top 6 of their respective weight classes at the UNK Holiday Inn Open on Saturday (Nov. 22).

Trey Page (285) won his weight class in the Elite Division, while Jon Inman (184) saw his perfect start to the season come to an end, taking second at 184 pounds. Other place-winners included Adam Ludwin(125 Elite, Fourth Place), Anthony Calderon (133 Amateur, Sixth Place), Bryce Lewis (165 Elite, Fourth Place), Josh Rodriguez (174 Elite, Sixth Place), Nathan Shipley (174 Amateur, Sixth Place) and Ethan Dale (184 Amateur, Sixth Place).

Page went 3-0 on the day to claim the 285 pound weight class Elite title.  After a first round bye, Page won by decision over York’s Saia Lotulelei, 3-2, in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal matchup with Jordan Passehl (Colorado Mesa).  Page defeated Passehl twice at last weekend’s UNC Open, and moved to 3-0 on the year in the head-to-head series with an 8-4 decision on Saturday, reaching the finals.  Once there, Page made quick work of his opponent, Michael Lowman of Augustana (Unattached), pinning his way to the title in 1:06.

Inman turned in another strong performance at the event, starting the day with a 10-4 decision over Chadron State’s Dylan Fors.  From there, Inman knocked off Garrett Wells (Air Force) with a 13-2 major decision to reach the semifinals, where he won by major decision (11-1) over Dylan Gabel of Northern Colorado – who he also defeated last weekend at the UNC Open.  In the finals, Inman (ranked fifth nationally) squared off with the No. 2 wrestler at 184 pounds, Kyle Piatt (Western State), and dropped a narrow 5-3 decision to finish second.  It was Inman’s first loss of the season.

As a team, the Tigers picked up nine wins by fall at the tournament, compiling a 56-46 combined record between 23 wrestlers.  In the Elite Division, FHSU went 16-10 combined.

Fort Hays State takes a week off of competition over the holiday break before returning to the mats on Friday, Dec. 5 against Central Oklahoma.  The match, set for 7 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum, is the first dual of the season (and the MIAA opener) for FHSU.  The annual Bob Smith Open (at FHSU) is held two days later on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Gross Coliseum.
