Fort Hays State picked up its second consecutive victory of the week in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, rolling over Cameron, 93-52, behind a double-double from Kate Lehman and 23 points from Chelsea Mason.
The Tigers (3-1) shot 59 percent (23-of-39) from the field and hit all six of its free throw attempts in the game. On the defensive end, FHSU had 11 steals while forcing 22 turnovers, adding 10 team blocks for the afternoon. The Tigers took care of the ball as well with just six turnovers in the game.
FHSU used two big runs early to put the game out of reach in the opening six minutes of action, starting the game with a 9-0 run before combining it with a 12-0 burst that brought the game to 21-2 with 13:29 on the clock. Soon after, the Tigers started another burst and scored 12 unanswered to take a 33-4 lead near the 10-minute mark.
Cameron hit just one field goal in the opening 10 minutes of action before picking things up and with back-to-back three-pointers from Brandi Leal as part of its own 8-0 run. With 2:33 to go in the half, a layup from Jill Faxon started a 10-2 run that closed out the half with FHSU leading, 53-21.
At the break, Fort Hays State led Cameron, 53-21, after hitting 59 percent of its field goals and shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Lehman had 20 points at the break, hitting the 20-point mark for the third time this season (and the second consecutive game in the first half). Lehman also had four blocks –
already a season-high at that point.
FHSU picked up right where it left off in the second half, rolling to a 10-2 lead in the first 3:36 of play to lead, 63-23. From there, the teams traded buckets until 10:47, when a three-pointer from Mason started an 11-0 run that lasted just under three minutes – growing the Tigers’ lead to 53 (84-31) with 7:54 to play.
Over the final seven minutes, FHSU was outscored by CU, 21-9, but it wasn’t close as the Tigers took the victory, 93-52.
Lehman finished the day with her first double-double of the season (and 41st of her career), totaling 26 points with 14 rebounds. Additionally, the center had eight blocks, just missing the third triple-double of her career.
Mason shot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the field with 5-of-10 shooting from long range, finishing second on the team in points (23). Other double-digit scorers for the Tigers in the game were Jill Faxon (14 points) and Keriann Shaw (10 points). Shaw tied a career-high for scoring in the game.
Guard Beth Bohuslavsky led the team with six assists on the day, while Faxon added four to go with three steals – tied for the team-lead with Mason.
FHSU heads south to Wichita, Kan. this week for a matchup with Newman on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Game time from Fugate Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m. Last time the teams played, FHSU and NU combined for 200 points (FHSU, 116-84) – the most in FHSU program history.
