Cold and flu season is approaching yet again, leaving some students on campus wondering how their health will be affected. In close quarters and with large populations, there is a high risk of illness spreading. To educate students on how to stay healthy, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs David Bollig answered a few questions to address any concerns students may have.
On average, how many students get sick on campus?
“Health and Wellness Services sees roughly half of the on-campus student population over the course of a year for one reason or another. However, those visits are not necessarily because the student is sick. Students come to us for a wide variety of health and wellness needs, including preventive care and other services. During cold and flu season, we do typically see students with common seasonal illnesses.”
What are some ways to treat the sickness or prevent it from spreading?
“Prevention really starts with the basics. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, get your annual flu shot, get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and maintain a balanced diet. Those are simple things students can do to help themselves stay healthy and protect those around them.
“If you do become sick, give yourself time to rest and recover. Students who are concerned about their symptoms or need medical evaluation can contact Health and Wellness Services.”
Where can students get a flu shot to stay healthy?
“FHSU students can receive their annual flu shot through Health and Wellness Services for free. You can schedule an appointment online (https://www.fhsu.edu/health-and-wellness/) or by calling our office (785-628-4401).
“Sickness is a setback that can be prevented. If students acknowledge the steps to staying healthy, they will see impressive results in their social and educational life. Stay safe and stay healthy, Tigers.
