Dogs in the Quad spreads joy, awareness for Humane Society

BY JESSALYN KIRCHHOFF

Students, faculty, and staff walking past the Quad in front of the Union on Wednesday morning might have noticed an unusual amount of furry friends walking around. Throughout the morning students at Fort Hays State University took part in an activity called Dogs on the Quad.

Dogs on the Quad is a yearly event hosted by the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority to raise awareness and collect donations for The Humane Society of the High Plains, an organization for sheltered animals. In this year’s attendance there were four dogs, one cat, and dozens of students walking by for a quick or extended pet.

Alpha Sigma Alpha took on The Humane Society of the High Plains as their philanthropy to help the animals who can’t help themselves.

“The animals can’t advocate for themselves,” a member of ASA said. “Someone had to step up, so we decided to”.

Which is exactly what Alpha Sigma Alpha did.

Most students that walked by the small fundraising event didn’t have a clue that Hays had an animal shelter, let alone how to help it.

Though donations are accepted and appreciated, there are other ways to help the shelter out. The Humane Society is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1-5 p.m. According to the Humane Society, they would love to have more volunteers and happy to welcome anyone willing to help with wide open arms. Volunteers can expect to take the dogs on walks, play with the cats, or complete seemingly minor tasks that actually hold the entire operation together.

With the help of Alpha Sigma Alpha members The Humane Society of the High Plains received good press, a few donations, and most importantly, some new volunteers.
