The Student Government Association met for its regular meeting on Thursday.
Magdalene Moy, chair of FHSU’s Generative AI task force, answered questions about how AI can be used at Fort Hays State University.
Moy, who is also the director of TILT’s Innovative Learning Strategies, acknowledged that every department and professor varies in its approach to AI.
Campus Relations Director Danika Szopinski asked Moy about whether FHSU has a blanket AI policy, citing professors with unclear AI policies.
“We don’t have a policy on that,” Moy said. “Instead, we have these guidelines, and we have guidelines rather than a policy because AI has changed rapidly.”
Many students expressed concerns about professors using AI to both create assignments and grade them.
Moy said they do not have a policy or guidelines for professors either, and the best way to get one is to email the chair and herself when this happens, so she can escalate the overall concern to the Provost and the President.
Lastly, she showed the Senate how to use Google Gemini for school purposes with your school account. Students can also utilize Microsoft Copilot.
In the Open Forum, Legislative Affairs Director Mayan Paz raised the topic of mental health and its seriousness. Paz shared news that there was an FHSU student who tried to take their life last week. The person is recovering and is in the hospital.
“Tell people it’s okay to feel the way they do,” Paz said. “Tell people it’s okay to go see counselors.”

In new business, nine bills were up for first reading.
Bill No. 26.F.104 proposed a trip request for Rahmatoulaye Thialaw Diop, wanting $1,453.47. The Senate recommends a total of $500, split between airfare ($ 250) and hotel ($250).
Bill No. 26.F.105 proposed a line item change for the Student National Association of Teachers of Singing. The bill requested that $1,050 be moved from the line-item “West Central Region NATS Conference Accompanist Fee” to $600 for the line-item “West Central Region NATS Conference Hotel” and $450 for the creation of the new line-item “West Central Region NATS Conference Registration.”
Bill No. 26.F.106 proposed a line-item change for the Accounting Club that would move $200 from the line item “Educational Trip Airfare” to the line item “Educational Trip Hotel.”
Bill No. 26.F.107 proposed that Anthony Arial be a Senator for the Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics. This bill moved to emergency business and was passed unanimously.
Bill No. 26.F.108 proposed that Olivia Pince be a Senator for the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. This bill was moved to emergency business and passed unanimously.
Bill No. 26.F.109 proposed that Cade Becker be a Senator for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. This bill was moved to emergency business and passed unanimously.
Bill No. 26.F.110 proposed that Sarah Christian be a Senator for the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. This bill was moved to emergency business and passed unanimously.
Bill No. 26.F.111 proposed that Wyatt Amlong be appointed as an At-Large Senator. This bill was moved to emergency business and passed unanimously.
Bill No. 26.F.112 proposed that Tanner Herskowitz be appointed as an At-Large Senator. This bill was moved to emergency business and passed unanimously.
