Food lovers and home chefs alike are invited to mix, taste and share at the Hays Public Library’s monthly Cookbook Club, a program that blends cooking with conversation in a relaxed, welcoming setting.
Held on the third Monday of each month, the club brings participants together at 12:30 p.m. in the Schmidt Gallery on the library’s first floor. Each meeting features a different cookbook, with members preparing and sharing recipes inspired by that month’s selection.
“The Cookbook Club is an excellent opportunity for people who enjoy cooking to try new recipes and talk about cooking with other ‘chefs,’” said Hays Public Library Communications Coordinator Callie Kolacny.
Kolacny also said that, unlike a traditional book club, participants do not need to read an entire book before attending. Instead, members simply browse the chosen cookbook and select a recipe that interests them.
Once prepared, the dishes are brought to the meeting and shared with the group, creating a potluck-style lunch and an opportunity to discuss cooking experiences.
“All of the dishes are set out, and everyone fills their plates,” Kolacny said. “While enjoying the food, the participants discuss the recipes and any other tips, advice or culinary successes or failures they want to share.”
The variety of cookbooks chosen throughout the year ensures an ever-changing menu of flavors and skill levels.
“Some choose easier recipes, while others might try something a little more challenging, but in the end the group typically has a delicious selection for lunch that day,” Kolacny said.
Kolacny said the club offers a unique experience for both seasoned cooks and beginners.
“The Cookbook Club is a great way for anyone who enjoys cooking to share their talents,” she said. “Also, for people who want to get out of their culinary rut and try new recipes, this is the perfect opportunity to expand your repertoire.”
No advance registration is required, and participants are welcome to attend as often as their schedules allow. By combining food, learning and social interaction, the Cookbook Club continues to offer a flavorful way for community members to connect and explore new culinary ideas together.
