Online Student Government Association (OSGA) hosted its first TigerTalk of the academic year on Tuesday.

Assistant Provost for Academic Programs and Dean of the Graduate School, Angela Pool-Funai, explained FHSU’s new cloud-based catalog and how to use degree maps and Workday to chart students’ academic journey.

By visiting https://catalog.fhsu.edu/, students can explore the various degrees, minors, and certificates available. Course descriptions are also available for each class.

“All of this comes directly from Workday, so this should be updating in real-time as courses change,” Pool-Funai said.

This functionality is helpful for prospective students, but current students can take the information a step further. Using Workday’s Academic Plan function, students can tailor the degree map to their needs.

“That’s a really cool way that I see Workday and the catalog working really well together because though we have one example (the degree map) of what it could look like for you to go through this program, each student can build their own with the help of their advisor,” Pool-Fuani said.

OSGA President Eileen Moore said she appreciated that Workday can display the breakdown of degrees in smaller increments, especially for online students who often take classes in addition to their jobs and other responsibilities.

“I do like now the more realistic planning of six hours a semester or five hours a semester, that’s sometimes all we can handle on top of other things,” Moore said.

Pool-Funai emphasized that the degree maps on the website are a starting point, but they assume that the student is a first-time freshman with no transfer or concurrent credit, which is rare. Each Academic Plan will be different.

“Everyone has their own journey,” Pool-Funai said.

OSGA’s next event will be a virtual coffee hour at 9:30 am CST on Saturday. Students can join the Zoom and chat with fellow online students. A link can be found on Tiger-to-Tiger.
