On Thursday, Interim Director of Career Development Lisa Karlin gave the senate tips on how to improve a resume.

Karlin started with the eight career readiness competencies: career & self-development, communication, critical thinking, equity & inclusion, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and technology.

She then discussed the attributes that employers value most.

“The top answer, over 88% said problem-solving skills, over 81% said ability to work in a team, and 77% stated communication skills specifically written,” Karlin said.

Karlin also said that 64% of employers use skill-based hiring and many also use applicant tracking systems.

“[Employers are] using that to screen [resumes], so your resume might get submitted, and it might not even be seen by a person,” she said.

Some resume essentials Karlin discussed included using clean formatting, excluding headers, graphics, and tables, writing the resume in chronological order from present to past, including skills and accomplishments, using action verbs and saving as a .docx or .pdf.

Karlin also discussed Big Interview and Big Resume, a new website that offers interactive interview practice and an AI resume tool for students to utilize.
