The Sternberg Museum celebrated National Fossil Day on Sunday with a free admission day filled with activities for the community, where patrons could view their private collections and other museum exhibits.
“It’s a nationwide celebration of not only fossils but paleontology in general and science education,” said Sternberg Museum Curator of Paleontology Amanda Peng. Peng said her favorite dinosaur is the pachycephalosaurus.
The private collections are specialty collections and displays that the public normally is unable to see. However, for National Fossil Day, the museum made an exception and displayed them alongside staff members who educated guests in fields such as paleontology, zoology, and geology.
“We have a great zoology collection that is famous in the U.S. What people do not understand is that our fossil collection is globally known,” said Sternberg Zoological Collections Manager Jackson Roberts. “We have researchers from Japan and the U.K. come in to view our collection.”
Roberts’ favorite dinosaur is the Mosasaur.
All of these stations were overseen by Sternberg Director Reese Barrick, who said his favorite dinosaur is the Utahraptor. Barrick said the museum has been hosting this event for 16 years.
“We are always excited to educate the public about the yearly theme and about the history of our world and the animals that once inhabited it,” Barrick said.
