Fort Hays State University’s Theater Department is kicking off the fall season with “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” a 90-minute comedic take on Shakespeare set in the 1960s. The production offers a lively introduction to Shakespeare for both students and audiences.
The play follows four young men who vow to forgo wine, women, and salt for three years to focus on their studies – until a princess and her court move in next door, sparking chaos and comedic romance.
“I want to make Shakespeare fun and accessible to everyone,” Theatre Director Catherine Trieschmann Miller said. “It’s full of dirty jokes, swordplay, wit, and romance.”
Trieschmann Miller adapted the script to keep it fast-paced and engaging, especially for students who may be unfamiliar with Shakespeare. The idea came from students who participated in last year’s fall play, “The Amish Project,” who expressed interest in doing Shakespeare.
Freshman Jordan Achenbrenner, cast as the Princess of France, said taking on Shakespeare for the first time is a rewarding challenge.
“I’ve never really done Shakespeare,” Achenbrenner said. “So challenging myself with Shakespeare will be a great experience for me.”
Junior Caleb Johnson, cast as Longaville, echoed Achenbrenner’s sentiment about the challenge of performing Shakespeare. He said memorizing long lines and mastering Shakespeare’s rhythm requires a different approach than modern plays.
“Shakespeare is so different, because it’s just like poetry. You’re just reading poetry on the stage, and it’s harder to understand what you’re saying,” Johnson said.
Despite the challenges, Johnson said the cast’s energy is encouraging.
“It’s a really good cast, and everybody seems to be pretty good for that, so I’m excited,” he said.
Trieschmann Miller said the production is about more than acting; it’s a chance for students to learn about tackling challenges.
“We want students to see that they can take on something difficult and still enjoy it. It’s about growth, teamwork, and discovering what you’re capable of,” she said.
“Love’s Labour’s Lost” will be performed at Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall. Tickets are on sale now, with free admission for all FHSU students.
