Earlier this month, the FHSU Student Government Association hosted The Green Event. The Green Event is more than just a day of service; it’s an opportunity for students to engage with sustainability while giving back to the Hays community. Organized annually with support from SGA, the event encourages students to step outside of campus life and connect with organizations, causes, and service opportunities that extend beyond the university.
For SGA Campus Relations Director Star Parham, the event holds special meaning.
“The Green Event gives me the chance to meet new people and organizations, but it also teaches me practical ways to live more sustainably in my daily life,” she said. “From recycling to finding new ways to keep campus clean and green, it inspires me to make changes that help both myself and the environment.”
This year’s event featured a wide range of activities designed to combine environmental awareness with community engagement. Students took part in Jana’s Campaign, volunteered in the campus garden, joined in a campus clean-up, wrote letters to both retirement home residents and local representatives, and so much more. Together, these projects offered a mix of hands-on service and advocacy, reflecting the event’s mission to make a positive impact on both people and the planet.
Each year, SGA works to keep the Green Event fresh by bringing in new student groups and community partners. While some activities return annually, the goal is always to introduce new projects and new faces, giving students different experiences each year. Outreach and collaboration remain central to the event’s growth, with organizers working hard to spread the word and recruit volunteers across campus.
As it continues to grow, the Green Event highlights the importance of service, sustainability, and community engagement at Fort Hays State. By encouraging students to give back while learning about environmental responsibility, organizers hope the event reminds everyone that even small actions can create lasting change, and always keep the campus green.
