The Fort Hays State University Job Fair provides students with opportunities to look for a path in the career of their choice. Multiple businesses attended the fair on campus last Thursday to speak with students about employment options.

FHSU Career Development Interim Director Lisa Karlin and Administrative Specialist Amanda Russell spearheaded the creation and supervision of the event.

“This is a great opportunity not only for students, but for our local and campus employers. This is the time of year when they tend to have a lot of vacancies, so this gives them the chance to connect with students one-on-one.” Karlin said. “They can actually have a conversation with the employers and find out a bit more about the jobs that are available.”

Students come to the job fair for a variety of reasons: earning money between classes, establishing a web of connections in the business world, or looking for a future career once they are done with school.

“It is Important to get your name and face out there to employers, it shows how dedicated you are about your major and getting a career,” said event attendee Yessenia Hernandez.

Students weren’t the only attendees excited about the event; employers were also excited about the new potential the students could bring to their businesses.

“Working in agriculture, the technology is always changing,” Midland Marketing Director of Human Resources Liesel Sims-Staab said. “Having Fort Hays in our backyard is awesome. The students get to bring in new ideas, we have employees with tons of years of experience, I think both can benefit from that collaboration.”

Employers aren’t just looking at FHSU students for needs right now, they also look to them for future employment needs.

“Students are the future. If they are studying to get ahead in this world, then we have opportunities for them,” said OPI representative Jim Grabbe.
