The Hays Public Library invites tweens and teens to join its weekly Chess Club for those looking to boost their brainpower this summer.

, The event takes place from 2-3 p.m. every Thursday during the summer and from 4-5 p.m. during the school year in the library’s upper-level commons area, where several tables are set up for play.

Designed for kids and teens of all skill levels, the Chess Club is a great opportunity to learn the game, practice strategies, and build confidence. Instructor Randy Brull leads the group, teaching rules, tactics, and game-play techniques while members challenge each other on the board.

“The Chess Club is for children and teens, and all skill levels are welcome,” said HPL Marketing Coordinator Callie Kolacny. “We encourage regular attendance so players can steadily improve.”

What started as a simple interest from a few young patrons and an instructor has grown into a well-attended weekly program. In addition to the weekly meetings, the club also hosts an annual tournament, giving players a chance to put their skills to the test. This year’s Summer Chess Tournament will take place on July 26 and is open to those ages 17 and younger.

Chess Club takes place year-round, with the only change being the time of day depending on the season.
