The French Open

Roland Garros, better known as the French Open, took place this past weekend in Paris. The United States had a good showing in the Grand Slam event, with three American men making it to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003 and Coco Gauff winning her second career Grand Slam and becoming the first American woman to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015.

The men’s singles draw was full of nail-biting matches, but none of them compared to the final match between the two young phenoms, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. This marked the 12th meeting between the two and was the longest match in Roland Garros history at 5 hours and 29 minutes. After going down two sets to one, Alcaraz faced three impending championship points from Sinner.

Despite the odds stacked against him, Alcaraz came back to defeat Sinner with a set score of three sets to two. This marked the fifth grand slam title for the young Spaniard at the age of 22, the same age at which Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal secured his fifth grand slam title.

The NBA Finals

After a buzzer-beater win for Tyrese Halliburton and the Indiana Pacers in game one, the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, looked to bounce back in game two of the NBA Finals on Sunday. A commanding 34-point performance from SGA led the Thunder to a game two win, evening up the series. Game three is set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Indianapolis.

The New “Cag” on the Block

Kansas City Royals top prospect and sixth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Jac Caglianone or “Cags,” was recently called up to the big leagues after spending 79 games in the minors with a .292 batting average on 17 HRs and 70 RBIs.

Despite going 0-4 in his major league debut, Caglianone hit an RBI double in his sixth at-bat as a big leaguer and proceeded to notch four hits on four at-bats in his sixth major league game. He became the second-ever Royal in history, alongside Bo Jackson, to record a four-hit game within his first six games in the majors.

The Royals are headed home to take on the New York Yankees today at 6:40 p.m. to kick off their five-game homestand before hitting the road to take on the Oakland A’s in a three-game road series.
