At Thursday’s Student Government Association meeting, Paul Adams, dean of the College of Education, updated the Senate on new advancements in the departments.
“The College of Education has 850 undergraduate students, both online and in-person, along with 1,500 graduate students, everything being online except counseling,” Adams said.
The College of Education prepares students for many of the largest groups of teaching shortages, such as special education, elementary education, and English teachers. This allows many students to graduate with a job waiting for them, as well as find sponsored student teacher positions.
“What’s happening is a lot of people are going out and becoming sponsored student teachers,” Adams said. “They are taking over classrooms, getting paid, getting insurance, and gaining experience.”
The College helps recruit students to the program at a future education day in the fall, which consists of 100 high school students. They also provide counseling through Fort Hays graduates. The College was granted $250,000 per year for five years to develop a tele-mental health program.
