Fort Hays State Tennis fell to Northeastern State in MIAA action on Saturday (Apr. 12) at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The RiverHawks moved to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA with the result, while the Tigers are now 12-6 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Joining Suzana Faucz for a win at No. 2 doubles, Irina Alfonso broke the single-season record at FHSU for total wins in a season, singles and doubles combined, now with 36.
Northeastern State won two of three very competitive doubles matches to secure the first team point of the match. FHSU’s No. 2 team of Alfonso and Faucz won 6-3, which allowed Alfonso to move atop the records list. The No. 1 team of Shreethika Vangala and Janae Montoya fell 6-3 and in the No. 3 match that ultimately determined the team point, Yone Pereiro and Ines Latorre fell 6-4.
The RiverHawks secured the team win for the day by winning the first four singles matches to finish. The Tigers won the last two to finish. Pereiro at No. 4 fell 3-6 in the first set, but rallied for a 6-4 win to force a tiebreak set. She won the tiebreak 10-6. Grace Unruh at No. 6 won in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
Alfonso forced a third set tiebreak in her No. 2 singles match after falling 4-6 in the first set. She won the second 6-2, but then fell 10-4 in the tiebreaker. Vangala fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, Faucz fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Bethan Gill fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.
The Tigers play two more matches at home next week, their final home matches on the schedule. They host Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday (Apr. 15) before another MIAA match with Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday (Apr. 16).
