FHSU men, women earn No. 2 seeds in MIAA tourney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank, announced Saturday (March 1) by the conference office. The tournament will be held inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. March 5-9.

The Tigers received the No. 2 seed after finishing second in the final MIAA KPI standings. Even though they finished fourth in the standings by record, the value of FHSU’s body of work throughout regular season conference play pushed it past Rogers State and Pittsburg State for the No. 2 seed. FHSU was 12-7 in MIAA play, while RSU and PSU were 13-6. FHSU defeated both RSU and PSU in head-to-head meetings during the regular season. The Tigers went 19-9 overall in the regular season.

As the No. 2 seed, the Tigers will take on the winner of No. 7 Central Missouri and No. 10 Northeastern State in the quarterfinals on Thursday (March 6) beginning at 2:15 p.m.

With a win, the Tigers’ road to Sunday would continue with a semifinal matchup at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday (March 8) before the men’s championship held Sunday (March 9) at 1 p.m.

Women

The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women’s basketball team will play as the No. 2 seed in next week’s MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank, announced Saturday (March 1) by the conference office. The tournament will be held inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. March 5-9.

The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed after finishing second in the final MIAA KPI standings. The Tigers also finished second in the overall standings, completing the regular season 25-3 overall and 16-3 in conference action.

As the No. 2 seed, the Tigers will take on the winner of No. 7 Central Missouri and No. 10 Emporia State in the quarterfinals on Thursday (March 6) beginning at 8:15 p.m.

With a win, the Tigers’ road to Sunday would continue with a semifinal matchup at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday (March 8) before the women’s championship is held Sunday (March 9) at 3:30 p.m.

The Tigers have been seeded second at the MIAA Championship once, with FHSU winning the 2022 tournament as the No. 2 seed. FHSU is 22-13 all-time in the tournament, including a 3-0 record as the No. 2 seed, an 11-4 record in the quarterfinals and a 17-12 record inside Municipal Auditorium.
