HASTINGS, Neb. – Fort Hays State had a strong start to the spring portion of their season on Saturday (Feb. 22) by posting a 7-0 win over Hastings College. The Tigers swept all matches contested on the day, moving to 3-2 overall on the season.
The Tigers swept doubles competition to pick up the first team point of the match. The No. 2 team of Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz won by a score of 6-1, while the No. 1 team of Janae Montoya/Shreethika Vangalaand the No. 3 team of Ines Latorre/Yone Pereiro each won 6-4.
In singles play, Faucz (No. 3) and Alfonso (No. 2) each limited their opponents to just two points in the match. Faucz won 6-1, 6-1, while Alfonso won 6-2, 6-0. Grace Unruh (No. 6) put up a consistent 6-2, 6-2 win. Pereiro (No. 4) had a shutout in one of her sets, winning 6-4, 6-0. Vangala took the No. 1 match 7-5, 2-6 and Latorre took the No. 5 match 6-1, 7-5.
Bethan Gill (8-0), Ines Steeman (8-0) and Montoya (8-2) all scored wins in exhibition singles matches.
Next on the schedule for the Tigers is a home contest against Bethel College on Tuesday, March 4.
