Despite frigid temps Tuesday and Wednesday, Hays residents can look forward to gradually climbing temperatures later in the week. Mike Umscheid, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Dodge City, said the region could see warm winds.
“[There will be] a storm system with downslope pattern southwest winds,” he said. “These southwest winds are going to stay strong, allowing warmth to spread northeast.”
However, this does not guarantee a warm front for Hays.
“The warmer air has to travel across the snowpack, slowing temp increases,” Umscheid said. “The warm wind is going to make a run at Hays but it might not quite make it.”
There is a 56% chance of snow Monday night with 1-3 inches of accumulation possible with a 40% chance for 1-3 more inches on Tuesday during the day. The bigger concern is the below-freezing temperatures. Tuesday will drop to -7 degrees Fahrenheit and Wednesday could see a low of -11 degrees.
The aforementioned downslope pattern winds are traveling from California, and must move over the Rockies in order to have any impact upon residents of Kansas. Citizens are still advised to bundle up and drive cautiously until the snowy conditions have decreased.
