The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has worked for decades to acknowledge and celebrate people who express a love of learning. The Phi Kappa Phi chapter at Fort Hays State University is no exception.

New members who have shown academic excellence and have accepted the invitation to join will be celebrated at an induction ceremony April 27 in the Memorial Union.

Current FHSU students can connect with and learn more about Phi Kappa Phi before the induction ceremony in the upcoming weeks.

Phi Kappa Phi Week, Feb. 3-7, is a national, week-long event during which Phi Kappa Phi spreads awareness about the organization. Throughout the week, the Phi Kappa Phi officers will host a table in the Memorial Union where students can stop by to ask questions and learn more about the honor society.

The following week, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 11, there will be an information session about Phi Kappa Phi in McCartney Hall 104. Gift certificates and other prizes will be awarded at the event.

Since Phi Kappa Phi’s initial founding in 1897, it has grown to have more than 300 chapters, including the one at Fort Hays, which was established in 1954.

The motto of Phi Kappa Phi is Philosophìa Krateìto Photôn, “Let the love of learning rule humanity” succinctly describes the goal of Phi Kappa Phi to encourage and celebrate a love of learning.

In addition to the importance of learning, Phi Kappa Phi values service to one’s community and others around them. Members and individuals considered for membership are expected to display this service.

Admittance into Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation sent via email and mail to eligible juniors, seniors and graduate students. Juniors who are in the top 7.5% of their class and have completed at least 72 credit hours are eligible. Seniors who are in the top 10% of their class and have completed at least 90 credit hours are eligible. Graduate students who are in the top 10% of their class and have completed at least 18 graduate hours are eligible.

Some of the benefits with joining Phi Kappa Phi include a variety of available scholarships. The organization offers scholarships for different levels of study.

“I was a recipient of scholarships when I was a student working through my academic studies, so I think those scholarships are so important and really help out members of Phi Kappa Phi,” said Rachel Dolechek, FHSU’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter treasurer.
