The Student Government Association met briefly on Thursday morning. In addition to passing two line item change bills, senators heard from executive staff members about several upcoming events.

For the second year in a row, SGA is providing rides to the polls on election day. From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, students can call 785-623-7896 or meet outside of the Memorial Union for the rides. According to Legislative Affairs Director Grace McCord, she is working with local Uber drivers who will provide the rides for free.

McCord also talked about this year’s fall Open Forum, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

“It’s a really great opportunity to ask questions of a lot of our student service providers,” she said.

Open Forum Panelists

  • Terry Pierce – University Police Department Chief
  • David Bollig – Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Health and Wellness
  • Laurie Larrick – Compliance Officer
  • Jaden Rahe – Director of Student Engagement
  • RJ Schnack – Director of Residential Life
  • Phil Kuhn – Union Catering Company owner
  • Olivia Keeley – Union Catering Company human relations
  • Frank Garcia – Union Catering Company retail director

President Ella Burrows reported the Higher Learning Commission will be on campus on November 18 to evaluate the affiliation between Fort Hays State University, FHSU Tech North Central and FHSU Tech Northwest. The visit will be similar to last year’s, which was a part of the university’s accreditation review process.

“They will be here to basically audit us, make sure we’re doing everything the right way and then give us the final seal of approval for the affiliation,” Burrows said.

An open forum with the HLC for students will be from 3-5:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union Prairie Room on November 18.

Burrows also informed senators of the Students’ Advisory Council’s goals for the year and of the Educational Opportunity Fund application deadline.

Burrows serves on the Students’ Advisory Council with student body presidents from the other state universities. The council will present its goal goals to the Kansas Board of Regents in December. They are to improve student engagement with the board, expand access to open education resources and recruit students to Kansas schools.

The Educational Opportunity Fund provides money for student projects, scholarships and, in some cases, salaries. The application for the next academic year and status reports must be turned in to Burrows by 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The next SGA meeting will be at 7 p.m. on November 7 in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
