Two late goals propel men’s soccer to road win

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 17 ranked Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer team maintained its position on top of the GAC standings with a crucial win at Northeastern State on Thursday night (Oct. 31). The Tigers scored twice inside the final 10 minutes of the contest to grab a 4-2 win. FHSU improved to 10-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the GAC, running its unbeaten streak to eight straight matches. Northeastern State fell to 2-7-6 overall and 2-4-3 in the GAC.

The Tigers struck early when Tadhg Walsh found the back of the net in the 2nd minute off a well-threaded crossing pass from Felix Tellez Ramirez. The Tigers doubled their lead just before halftime when Anders Sandsto scored his third goal of the season in the 40th minute on an opportunity inside the box.

In the second half, Northeastern State responded with a pair of goals to even the score. Javier Solis scored in the 53rd minute, followed by a strike from Assanie Brown in the 63rd minute to make it a 2-2 match.

However, the Tigers regained control late when Bastian Carlman was able to win a ball inside the box on the ground, popped up and scored the go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute. He then sealed the victory just two minutes later in a one-on-one situation off a ball over the top from Marcos German, pushing the lead to 4-2. Carlman upped his goal total to seven for the season.

Wouter Van der Borch picked up the win in goal, recording three saves and improving to 6-0-1 on the season. Gonzalo Castells took the loss for the RiverHawks, tallying six saves. The Tigers outshot the RiverHawks 16-6 and led in shots on goal 10-6.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 2) when they face Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. at 1 p.m. Rogers State remained two points back of FHSU with a win on Thursday night, and Southern Nazarene remained one point back with a win as well.
