EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Tennis won a total of five matches at the ITA Fall Central Regional, hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma (Sept. 20-22). Three Tigers won their opening round singles matches and the Tigers also had one singles consolation win and one doubles consolation win.
Earning wins in the opening round of singles play were Irina Alfonso, Yone Pereiro, and Grace Unruh. Alfonso won her match in the A Draw bracket over Fernanda Sandoval of Augustana 6-3, 6-4. In the B Draw bracket Pereiro went to a third-set tiebreak against Jennifer Pfaefflin of Ouachita Baptist and won 10-7 in the decisive set. She claimed the first set of the match 6-2 before Pfaefflin won 6-3 to force the tiebreak. Unruh also won in the B Draw bracket 6-4, 6-2 over Ali May of Ouachita Baptist. All three dropped their round of 32 matches, though Pereiro went to a third-set tiebreak again and fell 10-6.
Shreethika Vangala scored a three-set win in the consolation side of the A Draw. After taking the first set 6-3 and dropping the second 6-1, she won 10-4 in the tiebreaking set. She then fell in a three-set match in the next consolation round.
In doubles action, the team of Alfonso and Suzana Faucz lost in the opening round of the A draw, but scored an 8-0 win over a team from Missouri Western in the consolation bracket. The team of Pereiro and Unruh dropped both of their matches in the B draw.
