The Student Government Association addressed several student concerns at last night’s meeting, and learned that the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen internships will not be offered this spring or summer.

Lisa Karlin, the interim director of Career Services, spoke during the meeting about the internships. She said they did not receive funding for the program this year.

“It provided about 25 or 30 internships, so we’re really sad we didn’t receive funding, but we do have a few other opportunities that I want to make you aware of and you can share with other students,” she said.

Two on-campus internships will be available in the spring, one with Career Services for digital marketing and the other is to be decided. A summer internship will also be available with a non-profit organization in the Hays area.

As for student concerns, the lack of study spaces on campus during Forsyth Library’s renovation has been an ongoing topic at SGA meetings so far this semester. President Ella Burrows reported last night that Tomanek Hall and Rarick Hall will be offering spaces for students to use. Tomanek will be open until 11 p.m., and according to Burrows, the Foundry area of Rarick will be open “indefinitely.” Students who fill out a form on TigerLink will be given key card access to the building.

While Burrows and Vice President Emma Day did inquire about extending the Memorial Union’s hours past 10 p.m., it is not possible due to staffing issues.

“They’re hoping they can revisit this later in the semester if they can get those staffing issues resolved,” Burrows said.

Legislative Affairs Director Grace McCord gave a report from a committee she serves on through Jana’s Campaign, an organization that aims to prevent domestic and sexual violence. According to McCord, the organization was granted $3,000 to enact small changes on campus to improve safety.

“They’re going to be invited on our safety walk when we do that later this semester, but they also wanted me to open the floor and see if anybody had recommendations on how we can make our campus safer, or efforts to reduce sexual and domestic violence on campus,” she said.

Senators mentioned several dark spots on campus and a need for more call boxes on campus, specifically near the residential halls and parking lots. Day emphasized that the annual safety walk will be scheduled sometime this semester and both of those issues can be addressed.

During open forum, Sen. Noah Erichsen brought up a concern with work orders for students living on campus. He said several issues at the Wooster Apartments and Stadium Place Apartments have gone unaddressed for several weeks, including a mice problem in Stadium Place.

Burrows recommended those with issues email or call the Residential Life office, and said she would also contact Residential Life Director RJ Schnack.

“I know there is a new platform this year, so I don’t know if that’s contributing to the confusion,” she said.

The new work order system can be found in the housing portal, accessed through WorkDay.

SGA will meet again at 7 p.m. on September 26 in the Black and Gold Room.
