Every year, sports fans eagerly wait for September and the start of the NFL season. However, for many fans, September brings the beginning of fantasy football season as well.

At Fort Hays State University, this year’s FHSU Intramurals Fantasty Draft took place last Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. This year’s draft was on ESPN and is a full PPR (Points Per Reception) league.

Tre Pauda, the host of this year’s fantasy football draft, seemed confident in his draft strategy.

“I wanted to focus on getting my star players in the running back position first,” Pauda said.

Pauda follows a strategy many fantasy managers try to adhere to, having a solidified pair of running backs on the roster. Due to the running back position taking on a heavier workload, the position often earns more than other skill position players, such as wide receivers or tight ends.

This year has been a little different than previous years in the intramural draft. When leagues are larger, the opportunity to draft quality players diminishes with each round of the draft.

“Having 17 members in the league makes a big difference in who I am going to draft,” Pauda said.

Pauda also said he wasn’t going to focusing on drafting a specific quarterback.

“They come and go,” he said. “I’ll get whichever one falls to me.”

This strategy can be very bold since a lot of players tend to pick dual threat quarterbacks who can score both with their legs and their arm. For most fantasy leagues, the quarterback is going to be one of the star players and waiting until the end of the draft to pick a QB might make it hard to score with that position.

When the draft was about to start, players were given out “cheat sheets” that showed player rankings in order to help newcomers to fantasy football.

This year’s fantasy football league will run from September through December.
