Tennis has rough road swing

DURANT, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday (April 7) by a score of 7-0. The Savage Storm took all matches contested on the day, moving to 14-4 overall on the season. FHSU moved to 6-9 overall.

The No. 1 team of Shreethika Vangala and Fiorella Mendez had the closest doubles contest, falling 6-2. The No. 2 team of Irina Alfonso and Ines Latorre lost 6-1, and the No. 3 team of Yone Pereiro and Grace Unruhlost 6-0.

Alfonso (No. 2) had the tightest singles match, falling in heartbreaking fashion 11-9 in a third-set tiebreak. She won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-0. Her opponent Georgia Hosking squeaked by with the two-point win in the tiebreak. Pereiro (No. 3) won five games in her match, losing 6-2, 6-3. Vangala (No. 1) took four games off her opponent, losing 6-2 in each set. Mendez (No. 5) and Unruh (No. 6) each nabbed three games and Latorre (No. 4) took one game in her singles match.

The Tigers will be back at home next week for a conference match with Missouri Western on Friday, April 12, which is set to start at 1 p.m.

Saturday

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell by a score of 6-1 in conference play for the second-straight day on the road, this time at Northeastern State on Saturday (April 6). Northeastern State moved to 6-4 overall, 1-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU moved to 6-8 overall, 0-4 in the MIAA.

Shreethika Vangala was the only Tiger to win a match on the day, taking the No. 1 singles matchup. After falling in the first set 6-1, Vangala rallied for a 6-3 second set win and completed the comeback with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker set over Alisha Moldakhmetova.

Irina Alfonso nearly gave the Tigers another singles win at the No. 2 position, but fell in a decisive tiebreaking set. She took the first set 6-4 before falling in the second set by the same count. Sandra Mari Marti, ranked No. 17 in the region, took the tiebreaker 10-4. Yone Pereiro (No. 3) and Fiorella Mendez (No. 5) each took two games in each of their singles sets. Grace Unruh (No. 6) generated three games in the first set of her match, while Ines Latorre (No. 4) generated two games in the second set of her match.

Alfonso and Latorre (No. 2) had a tight doubles match, forcing a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, they came up short in a win-by-two scenario, 7-6 (9-7). The No. 1 team of Vangala and Mendez fell 6-3 and the No. 3 team of Pereiro and Unruh fell 6-0.

Friday

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell by a score of 6-1 at Central Oklahoma on Friday evening (April 5). The Bronchos moved to 5-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU moved to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos swept all three doubles matches contested, yielding only two points. UCO won the No. 1 contest 6-0 and won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches 6-1.

Grace Unruh was the only Tiger to record a win, taking the No. 6 singles match 6-4, 7-5. The Bronchos won the other five singles matches in straight sets. Fiorella Mendez scored five points in her No. 5 match, falling 6-3, 6-2. Ines Latorre (No. 4) scored all three of her points won in the first set. Irina Alfonso (No. 2) generated two points. Shreethika Vangala (No. 1) and Yone Pereiro(No. 3) each won one point in their matches.
