Tiger tennis dominates Bethel

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 6-4 overall on the season with a 6-1 win at Bethel College on Saturday (March 23). The Tigers took two of three doubles matches and then five of six singles matches to move to 3-3 in matches during the spring semester and snap a two-match skid.

The No. 2 doubles team of Irina Alfonso and Ines Latorre, and the No. 3 team of Grace Unruh and Yone Pereiro, breezed to claiming the team’s first point of the match by winning their contests 6-0. The No. 1 team of Shreethika Vangala and Fiorella Mendez had a tight match at No. 1, falling 6-4.

The Tigers posted a shutout at the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions to secure the team win, and won handily in straight sets at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to create the 6-1 final. The only team point yielded was at No. 2 singles as Vangala had to retire early from her match. Latorre (No. 4), Mendez (No. 5), and Unruh (No. 6) all won 6-0, 6-0. Alfonso won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Pereiro won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.

Hope Lubbers and Heidi Lubbers were able to pick up an exhibition doubles match and won by a score of 6-3.

Next week, the Tigers are scheduled to play an exhibition on Wednesday (March 27) at Pratt Community College, then return to MIAA play on the weekend with home matches against Newman (March 29) and Emporia State (March 30).
