Tennis falls at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Tennis had a 6-1 setback at Rockhurst University on Friday (March 22). Irina Alfonso recorded the lone Tiger team point by winning her singles match. The Tigers are now 5-4 overall on the season. Rockhurst moved to 8-3 overall.

The Tigers put up a solid fight in doubles action, but had nothing to show for it in team points as the Hawks swept the pairs competition. The No. 3 team of Yone Pereiro and Grace Unruh fell just short by a score of 7-5, while the No. 2 team of Irina Alfonso and Ines Latorrefell 6-3. The No. 1 team of Fiorella Mendez and Shreethika Vangala dropped their match 6-0.

Alfonso won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (8-6) to secure the lone team point for the Tigers. Unruh generated seven points in a hard-fought No. 5 singles match, falling 6-2, 7-5. Fiorella Mendez produced six points in her No. 4 match, falling 6-2, 6-4. Bethan Gill lost 6-4, 6-1 in her No. 6 match, while Pereiro was on the short end of 6-3 and 6-1 set scores at No. 3. Vangala fell by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 1.

Fort Hays State will play at Bethel College on Saturday (March 23), starting at 3 p.m. in North Newton, Kan.
