Caldwell wins 285-pound title in S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The 25th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s wrestling team had four wrestlers place at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday (Nov. 11), including Tony Caldwell who was the champion in the 285-pound bracket.

Caldwell won a total of four matches on his way to the title. The junior gutted out an 8-7 decision victory in the championship match over Edward Hajas of Augustana University, scoring two takedowns and winning via the ride-time point. Caldwell won by a fall in his first match of the day, followed by two decisions to earn his way to the final match.

No. 3 Tereus Henry posted a second-place finish in the open tournament at 197 pounds. Henry finished 3-1 in the open, handling his first two opponents. Henry claimed a sudden victory in overtime of his semifinal contest but was defeated by a 10-4 decision in the finals against eighth-ranked Caden Steffen of Southwest Minnesota State.

Drew Bell navigated his way to the consolation finals after being defeated in the opening round, ultimately placing fourth. Bell rattled off five-consecutive wins on the consolation side of the bracket, including two pins and one shutout major decision, before reaching the daily match limit. 

Aidan Johnson finished fifth place in the 184-pound division. Johnson won his first two matches to reach the semifinals before falling dropping a sudden-victory decision, 4-1. Johnson won his fifth-place match 16-10 over Cayden White of Minot State. 

D’Andre BrownKevin HonasCody Hicks and Connor Padgett were all one win shy of placing in their respective weight classes.

Fort Hays State will next compete at the Younes Hospitality Open next Saturday (Nov. 18) in Kearney, Neb. before hosting the annual Bob Smith Open on Saturday, December 2 beginning at 9 a.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.
