KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 1-0 over the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday (Oct. 29). With the win the team moved to 12-3-3 overall, 8-2-1 in conference play, while UNK dropped to 3-13-2 overall, 2-7-2 in the MIAA. The win also helped the Tigers clinch third place in the regular season standings, finishing behind Washburn and Central Missouri.
The lone goal of the match did not come until the 51′ off a score from Allison Worley for her seventh goal of the year. The kick by Worley first hit the crossbar then dropped straight down. After a discussion amongst the officials about whether or not the ball crossed the plane, the goal was confirmed and the Tigers clung to the 1-0 lead.
Fort Hays State outshot Nebraska-Kearney 12-5 in the match. UNK recorded two shots on goal that were both saved by Isabel Robben. With the win over the Lopers the Tigers have now won the previous 11 matchups in the series.
The 12-win regular season is the most wins in a regular season by Fort Hays State since the 2016 season.
The Tigers will now shift their focus to their first postseason match of the MIAA conference tournament which is set for Friday (Nov. 3). FHSU will play Northeastern State in Hays in the quarterfinals, with the semifinals and title match in Wichita.
Friday
The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team was defeated 1-0 on Friday (Oct. 27) by the No. 6 Washburn Ichabods. The loss dropped the Tigers to 11-3-3 overall, 7-2-1 in conference play, while the Ichabods improved to 15-1-1 overall, 9-0-1 in MIAA play.
Fort Hays State celebrated a total on nine seniors on Friday night for senior night. The seniors that were honored were Isabel Robben, Hannah Mares, Reilly Madden, Delayney Lunsway, Jadyn Newell, Skylar Forrest, Carly Walker, Jersey Garoutte, and Lynette Hawkins.
On a chilly evening in Hays both teams were unable to find the back of the net in the first half of the match. The Washburn Ichabods edged the Tigers in time of possession through the first 45 minutes of play and outshot Fort Hays State 5-2. Both teams recorded just one shot on goal throughout the period.
Fort Hays State had the first opportunity to score to start the second period. In the 50′ Hannah Mares was just feet away from scoring the go-ahead header off a crossing pass from Alex Hutton. Mares’ attempt fell just off target, keeping the game tied at 0-0. Washburn was able to break the scoreless affair just two minutes later in the 52′ after Khloe Schuckman took it herself for a goal. Isabel Robbenwas able to redirect the close-range shot, but not enough to push it off target.
The loss for for Tyson John and his team served to be his first loss at home since taking over the program, snapping a 21-game undefeated streak at home.
