The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team tied Emporia State on Sunday (Sept. 17) by a score of 1-1. The tie moves the Tigers overall record to 4-0-2, while the Hornets are now 0-3-3.
The tie was broken in the 23′ by Montserrat Diaz who took it herself just in front of the goal. Diaz had her first attempt deflected by the keeper, but stayed with it to notch the first goal of the contest. The goal for Diaz was her second of the season and also was the first time the Tigers have scored in the first period over the last three matches.
The Emporia State Hornets responded with a goal to tie things at 1-1 after halftime in the 65′. Mackenzie Dimarco won the open field battle against the keeper to net her second goal of the year. Dimarco was assisted by Asta Kristindottir.
Both teams pressed hard for game-winning opportunity. Forward Allison Worley was able to take two shots late in the match but was not quite able to connect.
The two teams combined for a total of 30 shots on the match. Fort Hays State was outshot by the Hornets 16-14. Emporia State had six shots on goal to Fort Hays State’s five. Both goalies had their work cut out for them on the match. Isabel Robben recorded five saves on the day.
The Tigers will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday (Sept. 22) to take on the Washburn Ichabods. First kick is set for 6 p.m. in. Topeka. After Friday’s match the Tigers will head to Emporia for a rematch with the Hornets on Sunday (Sept. 24).
