14 champs, 12 national qualifiers for FHSU track

The Fort Hays State track and field teams picked up 14 event victories and recorded 12 national qualifying marks at the 2023 FHSU Alex Francis Classic Thursday afternoon (April 27) at the FHSU Track & Field Facility. Both the men’s and women’s teams picked up six national qualifying marks and seven event victories on the day.

Mattie Rossi and Philip Landrum both recorded a pair of national qualifying marks. Rossi won both hurdles races, surpassing the NCAA DII qualifying mark in each. She finished the 100m hurdles in 13.95 and the 400m hurdles in a facility-record 59.19, both of which were season-bests for the senior.

Landrum was the top DII finisher in the 100m dash, finishing second overall with a season-best time of 10.46. He also anchored the 4x100m relay team alongside Toby WahlmeierHayden Albright and Xavier Robinson that finished first with a national-qualifying, facility-record time of 40.88.

Lyric Holman was second in the 200m run, finishing with a season-best time of 24.10. She was victorious in the 400m dash with a facility-record time of 57.03 and won the 4x100m relay alongside Jasey DowningKinley Brown and Tori Poe with a facility-record time of 47.03.

A trio of Tigers surpassed the national qualifying threshold in the javelin throw, including Addie Berens and Rhyann Brown on the women’s side and William Tice on the men’s side. Berens was first with a toss of 146-5, with Brown close behind in second with a toss of 142-6. Tice won the men’s competition by adding one centimeter to his personal-best, winning with a toss of 195-0.

The Tigers also won four other field events, including national qualifying marks from Dayton Williams in the high jump and Ryan Stanley in the pole vault. Williams won the high jump with a personal-best leap of 6-9.75, while Stanley’s first and only attempt of the day was safely over the 16-5.25 bar.

Xavier Robinson took home the title in both the triple jump and long jump, improving his PR in the long jump to 23-9.5 while clearing 46-8.25 in the triple jump. Both jumps were wind-legal facility records at the FHSU Track & Field Facility.

Taylor Savolt ran a personal-best 1:00.61 in the 400m hurdles, surpassing the national qualifying time and placing herself in 11th on the NCAA DII performance chart so far this season.

Trever Medina was the top Division II finisher in the 800m run, posting a national-qualifying time of 1:51.37. Emily Salmans won the 800m race on the women’s side, crossing the line in a facility-record 2:15.02.

Regan Hodsden was victorious in the 1,500m run, completing the race in a facility-record 4:40.64. Nolan Churchman finished first in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 53.93.

Next up for the Tigers is the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships, set for May 5-7 in Jefferson City, Mo.
