Track wraps up weekend in California

AZUSA, Calif. & KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State track and field teams saw student-athletes compete at a pair of events on Saturday (April 15). The Tigers tallied nine national qualifying marks on the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational while picking up four event victories at the Loper Invitational. In total, the Tigers turned in 17 national qualifying performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational this week.

Mattie Rossi was seventh in the 400m hurdles, completing the lap in 59.86 to etch her name in the top three on the NCAA DII performance chart so far this season. Taylor Savolt also surpassed the national qualifying time in the race, finishing 16th by matching her personal-best with a time of 1:01.17.

Rossi and Savolt wrapped up the day in the 4x400m relay, teaming up with Lyric Holman and Reba Mader to post a national-qualifying time of 3:45.64. The squad placed 10th in the event and currently rank in the top 10 in DII this season.

Holman also recorded a national-qualifying time of her own in the 100m dash, finishing 17th with a time of 11.82.

A pair of Tigers finished in the top five in the javelin, with Addie Berens placing third and Rhyann Brown finishing fifth. Berens’ top toss traveled 143-4, with Brown recording a top toss of 140-7. Both marks surpassed the national qualifying threshold.

Emily Salmans was 15th in the 1,500m Open B section, crossing the line in 4:38.20. She now ranks third on the FHSU DII era performance list, while Regan Hodsden is sixth on the FHSU chart after finishing 20th with a time of 4:39.27.

On the men’s side, Ryan Stanley cleared 17 feet in the pole vault for the third event in a row, placing third with a top clearance of 17-0.75. Hayden Albright surpassed the national qualifying time in the 400m dash, placing 16th with a time of 47.83 to move to sixth on the FHSU DII era performance chart.

Albright opened the day alongside Toby WahlmeierXavier Robinson and Philip Landrum in the 4x100m relay. The quartet combined for a national-qualifying time of 40.82, good for fifth place on the day.

Aaron Mangan ran the 1,500m run in 3:50.44, good for the second-fastest time at FHSU during the DII era and 12th place in the Open B section. Trever Medina completed the same race in 3:50.76, ranking third at FHSU. Nolan Churchman’s time of 54.03 in the 400m hurdles ranks him fourth at FHSU during the DII era.

In Kearney, Kenny Fritsch won the 100m dash with a time of 11.04, while Hadley Williams finished first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.28. The Tigers swept the long jump competition, with Ethan Salmans taking the men’s title with a top leap of 20-1 and Anndee Davidson winning on the women’s side with a top mark of 16-9.25.

Several other Tigers earned podium finishes, including Davidson (2nd, 16.93) and Kylin Rudzik (3rd, 16.97) in the 100m hurdles, Hannah Wiebe (3rd, 2:28.25) in the 800m run, Salmans (3rd, 15.56) in the 110m hurdles, Fritsch (3rd, 22.27) in the 200m dash, Javyn Contreras (3rd, 2:00.96) in the 800m run and Kolgan Ohl (3rd, 184-10) in the hammer throw.

The Tigers will next travel to Emporia, Kan. for the Midwest Classic on Saturday, April 22 before hosting the FHSU Alex Francis Classic on April 28.
