The Black Student Union will be hosting a hair care day on Wednesday in the Cody Commons. This event is meant to teach others how to care for and understand how to treat others’ hair and is an inclusive event for everyone on campus.
This event is supervised by BSU Vice President Kadrian Ayarza, who also came up with the idea.
“We would like to spread more awareness of how to take care of natural hair,” Ayarza said. “And to give people the opportunity to learn about different hair types and such.”
An educational event, the Hair Care Day will include staff from the Hays Salon, and will feature a presentation discussing various techniques used to take care of hair. It will also discuss different hair types and how to take care of each individual one.
The event will also feature other members of the BSU itself.
“Each of our members will have a booth set up,” Ayarza said. “There, you can each ask them questions about their journey with hair and the products they use. They’ll each have a different subject to present about.”
With this event, Ayarza and the Black Student Union hope to create an environment where anybody can feel welcome and learn something.
“It’s very inclusive for everybody,” Ayarza said. “And everybody can come and learn something new.”
Educating people about hair is very important to Ayarza, as she hopes to help others when it comes to learning about how to care for others’ hair.
“I’m biracial, and when I was younger, my mother struggled to take care of my hair,” Ayarza said. “I feel like it’s very important how you present yourself and how you feel, so knowing how to take care of your hair and other people’s hair is very important.”
