HASTINGS, Neb. – Fort Hays State Tennis notched its first win of the spring season Thursday afternoon (Mar. 2) after sweeping the Broncos of Hastings College. The Tigers dominated the court, winning all nine of their contested matches.
The Tigers picked up the doubles point against the Broncos after three sure-handed victories to begin the contest. The No. 3 doubles pairing of Stefany Stemmer and Grace Unruhmade quick work of their opponents, blanking them 6-0. The Tigers No.1 and No. 2 doubles teams held the Broncos to two points or less in their victories
Maria Paz Diaz (No. 4) had the largest margin of victory in singles play on the afternoon with two 6-0 set wins. Stemmer (No. 1) picked up a win in her singles match with scores of 6-0, 6-4. Irina Alfonsa (No. 2) and Unruh (No. 6) both clinched their matchups, outscoring their opponent 6-0, 6-1. Heidi Lubbers (No. 5) had the closest finish of the day but was able to escape victorious after two 6-4 sets.
Hope Lubbers competed in an exhibition singles match and also was able to win, completing the sweep of Hastings College.
The Tigers will have a quick turn around as they travel to Hillsboro, Kan. to play Tabor College on Saturday (Mar. 4).
