Tennis falls at DI Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Fort Hays State tennis dropped to 3-3 overall after a road loss to Division I Omaha Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18). It was the first match of the 2023 calendar year for the Tigers and the eighth match of the year for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early advantage after winning all three doubles matches, but the No. 2 doubles pairing of Grace Unruh and Stefany Stemmer were able to push their opponents to a tiebreaking third set, falling 7-5. Fort Hays was outscored 6-2 at both the No.1 and No. 3 slots in doubles.

Maria Paz Diaz and Fiorella Mendez battled all afternoon, winning five games each in their singles matches. Both Tigers fell by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. After a 6-0 set back in the first set, Unruh notched four games in set two before falling 6-4 to Keegan VanPelt in the No. 4 singles match. Irina Alfonso (No. 1) and Stemmer (No. 2) both were able to produce points in their singles contests.

The Tigers will be in action again on Thursday (Mar. 2) when they travel to Hastings, Neb. to take on Hastings College. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
