7 provisional marks for FHSU indoor track

PITTSBURG – The Fort Hays State track and field team broke three school records, recorded seven NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and took home three first-place finishes Saturday (Dec. 10) in Pittsburg. The Tigers were competing in the Crimson & Gold Invitational as well as day two of the Boo Rodgers Combined Events.

Fresh off an All-American performance at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, Regan Hodsdenwasted no time getting her indoor season started. The sophomore broke the school record in the 5,000m run, placing second with a time of 17:06.87. Hodsden bested the five-year-old record by nearly 14 seconds while hitting the provisional qualifying standard in the process.

Lyric Holman added a fourth indoor school record to her resume, placing fourth in the 300m dash with a time of 39.68. She shaved nearly two seconds off her previous PR while improving the school record by seven-tenths of a second. Holman also hit the provisional qualifying mark in the 60m dash, placing third with a time of 7.54.

Emily Salmans took home first place in the 800m run, completing the half mile in 2:14.90. The time was just three-tenths of a second off her own school record set in 2020 and .22 seconds off the provisional pace.

Jaycee Vath also had a good showing in the 5,000m run, finishing eighth with a time of 17:53.18 to etch her name in seventh on the FHSU DII era performance chart. Tori Poe was 16th in the 300m dash with a time of 41.58, good for third on the FHSU DII era list, while Jasey Downingfinished 23rd in the 300m race with a time of 42.56, ranking her ninth at FHSU during the DII era. Reba Maderran a 58.88 in the 400m dash to finish eighth in her collegiate debut, good for the sixth-best time at FHSU during the DII era.

In field competition, Taylor Savolt finished sixth in the invitational section of the triple jump with a top clearance of 38-3.5.

The men’s team broke one record and recorded five provisional performances on the day. Philip Landrumbroke the school record in the 300m dash, finishing sixth with a time of 34.52. The senior also hit the provisional mark in the 60m dash, crossing the line in 6.86 to place 11th.

Ethan Lang turned in a provisional performance in the 800m dash, finishing second with a time of 1:51.16. Trever Medina took home first place in the mile run after crossing the line in 4:15.25.

In the field, Jacob Clark and Ryan Stanley both cleared a meet-record 17-2.75 in the pole vault, with Clark finishing first and Stanley second due to total misses. The mark currently ranks first among all reported performances thus far in Division II. Clark moved up to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the process.

Three other Tigers joined Landrum on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the 300m dash, with Cole Diffenbaugh finishing 24th with a time of 35.83 to move to seventh on the list, Toby Wahlmeier finishing 25th with a time of 35.95 to move to eighth on the list and Kenny Fritsch finishing 35th with a time of 36.42 to move to 10th on the list. Isaac Radke now ranks ninth on the DII era list in the 800m run after finishing ninth on Saturday with a time of 1:54.16.

Early in the day the multi-athletes wrapped up competition in the men’s heptathlon, with Nolan Churchman recording a provisional-total of 5,303 points to finish fourth. Luke Hampl was 14th with a total of 4,574 points, good for eighth on the FHSU DII era performance list.

The squads will now take a break for the holidays before returning to competition at the Washburn Rust Buster on January 21.
