Henry, Lindsey win titles at Bob Smith Open

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

The Fort Hays State wrestling team hosted the annual Bob Smith Open on Sunday (Dec. 11). The Tigers finished with 13 placers, including individual championships from Tereus Henry (197) and Cade Lindsey(174). The Tigers also had three runner-up finishes, one third-place, three fourth-place, three fifth-place, and one sixth-place finish.

Henry received a first-round bye before coasting to his second individual championship of the season. He reached the finals with wins via technical fall, decision, and major decision before capping off his day with a 17-0 technical fall victory in the finals. Henry, ranked No. 4 in Division II at 197 pounds, outscored his opponents 51-2 on the day.

Lindsey reached the finals via three bonus-point wins, including one fall and two technical falls. In the championship, he secured an 8-0 major decision over Gavyn Brauer of Nebraska-Kearney to claim his first individual championship as a Tiger.

Mason Turner (133), Cason Lindsey (157), and Ryan Tiers(197) all claimed runner-up finishes at their respective weights. Turner coasted to the semifinals with two wins by fall before advancing to the finals on a 7-4 decision. He unfortunately fell short in the championship, losing to Joseph Ariola of Nebraska-Kearney by a 5-1 decision. Competing unattached, Lindsey won his first two matches by technical fall before advancing to the semifinals with a 6-2 decision. He reached the finals with a first period fall, but fell in the championship by an 8-2 decision. Tiers reached the semifinals via two wins by fall. A 3-0 decision over Braden Baumgartner of Colorado Mesa lifted him to the championship, but he fell victim to a technical fall and claimed second.

Aidan Johnson claimed the lone bronze finish for the Tigers at 174 pounds. Competing unattached, Johnson received a first-round bye before falling in the second round by a 3-1 decision. He then worked his way up the consolation ladder to reach the consolation semifinals. He advanced to the third-place match with a 3-1 decision and claimed third with an 11-5 decision.

Drew Bell (141), Matthew Rodriguez (174), and Anthony Caldwell (285) each finished in fourth-place at their respective weights. Competing unattached, Bell reached the semifinals with wins by fall and decision before dropping a 4-0 decision. He advanced to the third-place match with a 7-2 decision over Jazen Brown of Labette Community College, but fell short in his final match losing by a 6-1 decision. Also competing unattached, Rodriguez followed a similar path reaching the semifinals with wins by fall and decision before falling to the eventual champion, Cade Lindsey, moving him to the consolation semifinals. He picked up another fall to reach the third-place match but fell just short against Johnson and wrapped his day in fourth-place. Caldwell also reached the semifinals in the 285-pound class with wins by fall and major decision. He moved to the backside after he fell victim to a quick pin by eventual champion Hayden Simpson of Oklahoma State. Caldwell reached the third-place match with an 8-3 decision, but chose to medically forfeit after that.

Cody Lambert (149), Cody Hicks (157), and Blaise Ronnau(165) each claimed fifth-place in their brackets. Lambert reached the semifinals with two wins by fall, but lost his next two matches before his opponent medially forfeited the fifth-place match. Hicks fought his way up the entire consolation bracket to reach the consolation semifinals after a loss in the opening round. He won five matches on his way including one fall, one major decision, and three decisions. Upon reaching the consolation semifinals, Hicks had wrestled his maximum number of matches and was granted fifth-place in a no contest at the placement match. Ronnau started out strong with two wins by fall before dropping to the consolation bracket by a 6-4 sudden victory. He advanced to the consolation semifinals with a decision and a major decision before falling in a close 7-6 decision and claimed fifth-place via a medical forfeit by his opponent.

The final placer for the Tigers was Drew Burgoon, who captured sixth-place at 149 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Burgoon fell to the back side after a 3-2 decision. He would receive another bye before winning his next three matches via decision, fall, and major decision, but after he lost by fall in the consolation semifinals his day came to an end as he medically forfeited the placement match.

The Tigers will be back in action next weekend when they wrap up the 2022 portion of their season at the annual Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.
