By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed at the Dan Harris Open at Baker University on Sunday (Nov. 6). Aidan Johnson was the lone placer for the Tigers, bringing home a runner-up finish at 174 pounds.

Johnson won his first match by technical fall 19-3 before advancing to the quarterfinals with a second period fall. After an injury default propelled him to the semifinals, the junior picked up his second fall of the day over Tye Frnka of Northeast Oklahoma. In the championship, Johnson found himself tied with Joey Walt of Baker at the end of regulation, but Walt was able to secure a takedown and claimed the title by sudden victory.

Freshmen Drew Bell (141) and Matthew Rodriguez (184) made strong appearances in their first open tournament. Both fell just short of placing, reaching the consolation semifinals. Bell worked his way to the quarterfinals with a pair of first-period falls, but fell in a 8-5 decision to Ryder Ramsey of Central Oklahoma. The Hoxie, Kan. native worked his way to the consolation semifinals with a win by 8-1 decision before picking up his third fall of the day. Bell’s day came to an end when he fell to Jack Lage in a 5-2 decision. Rodriguez made it all the way to the semifinals in the front side of the bracket winning his first match by technical fall and his next two by decision. The Salina. Kan. native fell to Anthony Des Vigne of Central Oklahoma via technical fall in the semifinals before losing by second-period fall in the consolation semifinals.
