Tennis cruises past KWU

Fort Hays State Tennis defeated Kansas Wesleyan 7-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 5) at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The Tigers won all matches contested, including exhibition action. The Tigers finished the fall portion of their schedule with a record of 3-2.

The Tigers held the Coyotes to one point or less in all three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Stefany Stemmer and Grace Unruh posted a 6-0 shutout in their contest, while the No. 1 team of Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz and the No. 3 team of Heidi Lubbers and Fiorella Mendez each won 6-1.

Paz Diaz (No. 3) held her opponent scoreless in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0. Alfonso (No. 1) limited her opponent to just one game won within the two sets, winning 6-0. 6-1. Stemmer (No. 2) and Unruh (No. 5) each won their contests 6-1, 6-1. Mendez (No. 4) won 6-0, 6-2 and Heidi Lubbers (No. 6) won 6-1, 6-3.

Hope Lubbers and Gracen Friess teamed for an exhibition in doubles by a score of 6-2, and both won exhibition singles matches each by the score of 8-1. Unruh also squeezed in an exhibition match following her official match and won 8-0.

The spring portion of the season for the Tigers is set to begin on February 18 when they travel to face University of Nebraska-Omaha.
