EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Emporia State on Sunday (Sept. 11). The Hornets took the lead early in the second half, but Megan Wiman leveled the match for the Tigers with about ten minutes remaining. The Tigers move to 4-0-2 on the year and the Hornets tie for the first time moving to 1-4-1.

The Emporia State offense was very active in the first half as they took ten shots with four on target. After a scoreless first half, the Hornets broke through when Aislinn Hughes headed in a corner from Hannah Woolery. The Tigers found the equalizer in the 80th minute when a Reilly Madden free kick was knocked out of the box by a Hornet defender and directed to Wiman, who delivered a strike of magic from well outside the box by chipping the ball perfectly over the keeper’s head into the upper left corner of the net.

The Hornets finished with 18 shots, eight on target, compared to seven shots by the Tigers, with three placed on goal. Keeper Isabel Robben made a strong showing in goal for the Tigers posting seven saves compared to two by Mackenzi Goen.

The Tigers will be back at home next week as they host Washburn in their final non-conference match on Friday (Sep. 16) before they opening conference play with Emporia State on Sunday (Sep. 18).

Friday

KEARNEY, Neb. – The FHSU women’s soccer team took down Nebraska-Kearney 1-0 on Friday (Sept. 9). The Tigers netted their lone goal in the first half and held off the Lopers to pick up their third consecutive shutout and fourth overall for the season. Fort Hays State improved to 4-0-1, while UNK fell to 0-4-1. The Tiger defense made an impressive showing as they did not allow a single shot to the Lopers in the first half. FHSU netted its lone goal in the 32nd minute when Montserrat Diaz collected a Reilly Madden pass that ricocheted off a UNK player. The redirection of the ball left Diaz open at the top of the box and she fired it past the keeper. The final shot count was in favor of the Tigers 8-2, all but one on target. Isabel Robben saved the only Loper shot placed on goal and Mackenzie Smith saved six shots between the posts for the Lopers.
