Tiger Fitness Center adds new equipment, lockers for school year

Now that class is back in session, FHSU students and staff are arriving back on campus. Many of these students are looking for a place to improve their health as well as avoid the ever-so dreaded “freshman 15”. One such place to do this is the FHSU Tiger Fitness Center.

Over the past two years, the Tiger Fitness Center has been working very hard to improve its space by having its floors redone, getting new TVs, redoing the weight benches, and replacing older machines with newer/upgraded models.

Drew Gannon, an instructor in Health and Human Performance, said the staff felt as though the fitness center had been long overdue for a few touch-ups, and they haven’t done a remodel as extensive as this one since the 2007-08 school year.

Gannon also oversaw the Fitness Center during the bulk of the remodel. He said he hopes the new additions to the Fitness Center will benefit the campus.

“[We want the Fitness Center] to create an inclusive environment for staff and students who are looking to live a healthier lifestyle,” Gannon said.

Replacements were made to both cardio and weight machines, including a new treadmill, elliptical, and Jacob’s Ladder. A new Stair Mill is on its way as well. New weight machines include three cable machines and a whole new Strength Line. A new leg press machine and a smith machine are making their way to the Fitness Center as well.

The Tiger Fitness Center is a staple of the Human Health and Performance Department and is located in Cunningham Hall Room 132.

The Fitness Center is not only open for students and staff to exercise on their own but also hosts a large variety of group fitness classes throughout the week located in Cunningham Hall Room 122. These classes are free of charge.

Some of these classes include “Back to the Basics” which is a class open for beginners to the gym. “Fit-30” is a quick 30-minute workout over the lunch hour, Strictly Strength for those looking to build muscle, and ”HIIT” or High-Intensity Interval Training are other strength classes offered in addition to Yoga, Zumba, and more.

The Tiger Fitness Center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
